Reflexology is an alternative medicine that uses manual techniques and applies pressure to specific reflex points or zones on the feet, hands, or ears. It aims to promote both physiological and psychological normalization of the entire body. The theory behind reflexology holds that zones and reflex areas on the feet and hands correspond to different parts of the body, and working on these areas can have physical effects on the body.
Living in a fast-paced and demanding modern society leaves us vulnerable to tension, anxiety, and stress. Our bodies often bear the brunt of such pressures, leaving us stressed and exhausted. Reflexology helps release the suppressed emotions of stress, inducing deep relaxation and alleviating its effects. We recommend a weekly 1-hour reflexology session to keep your body in its best shape.
Reflexology aims to balance all body systems, stimulating blood circulation and promoting active, healthy body functions. It operates on three levels: physiological, psychological, and spiritual.
A widely held theory is that reflexology originated in prehistoric periods of China. There was also ancient documentations unearthed in Egypt with similar practices dated around 2000 B.C.. Reflexology was first introduced to the U.S. by William H. Fitzgerald, a ear, nose, and throat specialist, and Dr. Edwin Bowers in 1917. They believed that applying pressure on different areas of the body will have anesthetic effects. Later in the 1930s and 1940s, Eunice D. Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist modified and refined the theory. She mapped zones on feet ,which she believed reflects on various parts of the body. Her procedures and methods, later developed by Laura Norman, are widely used by modern reflexologists.
